THE FRASER VALLEY

Known worldwide as the Mighty Fraser our home river begins as a trickle near the B.C.-Alberta border. It makes it’s way West before making a sharp turn South near the city of Prince George. Near our border with the U.S. it again makes a sharp turn, this time heading West to the Pacific ocean. Along it’s path the river picks up hundreds of tributaries. The larger ones such as the Quesnel and Thompson are sizable flows themselves.

Locally the fraser valley is known as the suburban area North and South of the river between the Port Mann bridge, linking  Burnaby and Surrey, and the town of Hope. As a fisherman I consider it to be a much larger area. Beginning North at the confluence of the Thompson and Fraser rivers to as far South as the U.S. border. From as far East as the West gate of Manning park and West to the Pacific. I selfishly include the Skagit, Squamish and various other smaller wadersheds in this.

We are blessed to be able to chase a variety of fish every month of the year. Everything from Carp to Steelhead, Char to 5 species of  Salmon can be found during the season. Sturgeon are available all year and provide a change of pace for flyfishers. When fishers to the North are getting the winter blues waiting for the lakes to thaw, we are chasing Steelies and Cutties. Many places are far from the beaten path and require long hikes, jet boats or helicopters to reach. These are my favourite places, where I can avoid the crowds that can be present in the more popular rivers and lakes.
