So it’s been awhile, I’ve been busy with the J.O.B however have been crabbing and looking for salmon out in the salt. There are fish around I suspect based on the sheer number of Orca’s that are milling about in the strait around the mouth of the Fraser. Now on to the latest day out. A week or so ago while on the way back from crabbing Ryan(of M&Y flyshop) rang me up and asked if I would be interested in fishing the Thompson. Well…of course! so the date was set for a week later. I decided that this would be a good time to keep a promise I had made to someone, and so I invited a friend Sarah, Sarah fishes the Skagit and elsewhere fairly regularily. However it was time for her to experience the big bad “T”. So at 4am off we went, picked up Ryan and headed out. We arrived at about 9 am and geared up and started the hike to the spot. Sarah was up first so with a little instruction from myself and Ryan(opposing techniques of course) I think it was her third cast and she was into a fish of about 15 inches! Now she was on her own and we could fish! The day was rad it wasn’t to hot at least while the water supplies lasted! plenty of BIG fish were brought to hand and lots and lots of 12-16 inch scrappers filled in the gaps. Ryan caught the fish of the day, we were fishing along one bank and I saw Ryan set up on a fish, as soon as I saw the head turn I knew and Ryan knew he was into a large fish! off went the fish downstream and off went Ryan in hot pursuit. I reeled up and grabbed my camera and Ryans bag(who knows how far some of these fish are gonna run!)and followed the two for the hopefull shots. Well it was all worth it as a 5 lb bow came to hand! The rest of the day went by with a few more fish caught. So enjoy the pic’s!

Well, I haven’t posted very much in the last couple of months. Some Sturgeon fishing, a trip to Disneyland, crabbing, jet boating in the Fraser Canyon, gear fishing for salmon, but not much fly fishing. I’ve been busy collecting gear for our Roosterfish trip in November though. I know it’s a long way off but we plan to head down ready to fish hard. I’ve found a new rod and reel company that I’m in love with. No-nonsense gear made by a serious tuna chaser from back East. I’ll let the cat out of the bag once I do more casting and take more pictures. The reels will be sweeeeeeet on spey rods by the way. I also received two more Meisers. Trout Master Conversion rods, both. They convert from 11′ 4/5 switch rods to 13′9 5/6 speys. We’ll have them out this weekend in search of big trout in the desert. The following weekend we will be up in the cariboo hunting big ones as well. There should be lots of photos and stories to share soon.

Stay tuned………..

My friend Ed Kunze, a guide in Zhiuatenejo Mexico,  just sent me this video of Sailfish attacking a bait ball. From the surface all you would see is birds diving into a school of baitfish. Am I the only one who wants to go back to Mexico?

Well today myself and a friend hit the flow. The reports had been great! and apparently  alot of people get the same reports. The river was a bustlin with foot traffic today and everyone was havin a good time regardless of  catching or not. So I arrived at 10:30 am and found  Dan down at the “beat” he said he had been through first and then the five guy’s standing in the run now, had arrived so we moved up. We had only been in the upper run for ten or so mins when Dan hooked up! After a 15 min battle a bright fish was delivered to the beach a few snaps later and off she went back on her way. Well I thought YES here we go fresh horny fish this is going to be a good maybe great day. Wrong, no more fish for either of us however I did see a few more caught, caught in water that I thought I had covered VERY well.  All in all it was a good day after the weather cleared up and the river cleaned up later on in the afternoon. So I’m 0/3 this year for steel, and it’s looking like it may stay this way with the new addition to our family arriving sometime in late April. However stillwater season and warmer temps are coming soon, and the way I see it…well maybe I keep those plans between me and Coen! jk!

Till next time:)

Well hello there it’s been awhile since my last post, I’ve managed to get out a few times for cutty’s and steel. For steel i’m 0/2 however for cutty’s I’ve been having a great time finding good numbers. Now I think that I said I would try to take more pic’s well I’m getting better but I’m not by any means taking enough. Here’s a few from today with Coen and a friend Matt. We only found a couple of cutts today but it was well worth it. Both fish were caught on a size 8 fry pattern using floating line and slow drop style retrieve, and sight fishing. Wow! It’s been a while since my last post. It’s been an unusual winter aside from the unseasonably warm conditions. I haven’t had as much time to fish as I usually do. Most times when I have had some time the rivers have been blown out and on one weekend my back was blown out.  One of my favourite little steelhead streams just South of the border should be hot right now but with the Olympics in town I’m staying as far from the border crossings as possible. My second choice of river, the Squamish, would require a drive through the belly of the beast. We’ll probably try and take in some of the festivities and pick up with the search for chrome in a few weeks. We have managed a few days on the water in the valley and Washington as well, but no hook ups to show for it.  But, I guess that’s winter Steelheading………..

So we are all back safely from Ixtapa, tanned and relaxed. We had a great time although 2 weeks does fly by! So on to the fishing well, I was up against a full moon cycle and long story short I lost. On the first day we headed out a little groggy but ready, at the 9 mile mark Luis (guide) checked his GPS, a few moments later FISH ON! as Luis set the hook on the sailfish out she came. She looked to be about 6-7 ft long with a gold hue. However as quick as it started it ended with a swoop of the bill she was free. We trolled hoping for more to tease to the boat for the fly but to no avail. Around lunch Luis perked up and said how about some sharks? well after sleeping on and off in the panga and no action I was in plus My two companions (my brother in law and father in law) were looking just as bored as I was. Well luis had seen a piece of drift wood floating around and new it would harbour something. So we caught a few sharks and moved on, they were very much like dogfish and so we lost interest fast. On to day two with my wife Bobbi well we caught bonita but no jacks or rooster fish. I took a few shots with a disposable camera after I forgot my other one so we’ll have to wait untill I use up all the film. all in all it was a bust on the fishing front. However the rest of the trip was fantastic and Coen was livin the dream, two weeks of sunscreen and diapers mixed in with swimming in the pool and zooming around the condo.
Sorry for the lack of pictures, Having to much fun!
Untill next time.

Well the day’s of going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark are definatley upon us all. So what is the best thing to do(if you can) GO AWAY!!! Well myself and family are headin south,,, far south, Ixtapa to be exact. So for two weeks I will be fishing for sailfish, Dorado, Jacks and bonita to name a few. So off to Micheal and young I went to pick up the new rod a 12 wt that I could afford and some flies etc. I also borrowed an unused Loop 11-14 hd from Dave and some lines, well He donated the lines as i cant bring them back as I’m not checking in my bags on the way home. I’m not sure he fully understands this so maybe I’ll tell him that they also rejected the reel! yeah right! Oh well they’ll be there (the lines and flies) for Dave and Sarah when they go back. So here are a few pics, I’ll have a full write up when we get back. P1010019 P1010023
